If you've ever promised a client a custom laser engraving job with 36 hours to spare, you know the specific kind of panic that hits when the package finally arrives with the wrong material.
I coordinate production and shipping for a custom engraving company. In six years, I've handled 200+ rush orders, including same-day turnarounds for small business clients. In March 2024, a client called at 9 a.m. for 40 acrylic awards needed by 5 p.m. Normal turnaround was three days. We test-cut the first sheet, discovered the new acrylic batch had a different coating, adjusted the settings, and handed over the order at 4 p.m. The client's alternative was showing up to their event with nothing.
This is the checklist I run through every time a rush order lands. There are 10 steps. No, you can't skip any of them, especially when you're exhausted.

1. Triage before you say yes
Before you say 'sure, we can have it tomorrow,' ask three questions: what exactly is the deliverable, what time is the actual deadline, and is the material confirmed and in hand? If any of those answers is vague, that's a red flag. A rush order with fuzzy specs is how mistakes happen.
I use a quick mental calculation. Worst case: complete redo at $3,500. Best case: an $800 rush fee. The expected value said go for it, but the downside felt catastrophic. That tension is normal. Just don't ignore it.
2. Match the machine to the material
For wood, acrylic, glass, and leather, a Glowforge laser engraver is tough to beat for speed. For direct metal marking—serial numbers, metal tags—you usually want a fiber laser instead of a CO2 laser. That's not a sales pitch. It's physics. The wavelength of a CO2 laser doesn't get absorbed by bare metal the way a fiber laser's beam does.
One machine doesn't do it all. I have mixed feelings about marketing terms like 'all-in-one.' On one hand, I love the idea of one box doing everything. On the other, a machine that promises everything usually compromises somewhere. An 'eye-safe fiber laser' might be great for metal, but it's not better at cutting wood than a CO2 system.
And if you're running an older Glowforge Basic 3D laser printer, don't try to engrave bare metal with it. A customer tried that once and ended up with a wasted sheet and a scratched lens (ugh).
3. Verify material compatibility
Before you open the lid, check what the material is actually made of. PVC, vinyl, synthetic leather, and anything with chlorine can release hydrogen chloride gas when lasered. That can corrode the machine and hurt anyone nearby. This isn't about being a materials snob. It's about not destroying your tooling at 11 p.m.
The most frustrating part of rush jobs: the same issues recur despite clear communication. You'd think written specs would prevent misunderstandings, but interpretation varies wildly. Cast acrylic and extruded acrylic cut differently, and nobody mentions the difference until the edge comes out cloudy. A quick test on a hidden edge takes two minutes. It's worth it.
4. Fix the file before you upload
Most of my rush-order failures trace back to the design file. Check these: fonts outlined, images at 300 DPI at final size, cutting paths as clean vector lines, and dimensions that match the physical item. If someone sends a logo from a website, it's probably 72 DPI. You can't 'make it bigger' in the laser software and expect it to stay crisp. You can recreate it, but that takes time. (Ugh.)
The 300 DPI rule is the same standard used in commercial print. For laser engraving, don't go below that if you want clean edges.
5. Run a test pass on the same material
The temptation is to skip the test cut because the clock is ticking. Don't. A $2 scrap of material is cheap insurance. Use the recommended settings in the Glowforge interface as a starting point, then adjust for your batch. Material batches vary, especially wood veneer and acrylic (as of early 2025, at least).
If the test looks burned, lower the power or increase speed. If it's faint, do the opposite. This is the step that separates a good rush job from a tragic one.
6. Don't skip the safety basics
When you're rushing, safety is the first thing to get dropped. Don't be that person. A CO2 laser emits an invisible infrared beam. You can't see it, and it can damage your eyes before you feel anything. An 'eye-safe fiber laser' usually means the beam path is fully enclosed, which is a good design, but it doesn't mean the laser is harmless. Open-beam fiber lasers can still cause serious eye injuries.
Watch the fire risk too. An unattended laser that runs late into the night is how workshops burn down. A shop near ours lost its building in 2019 to an unattended engraving job. I'm not saying that to scare you. I'm saying it because rush hour is exactly when people get reckless. Even a Glowforge enclosure is not a babysitter.
7. Get client approval before the final run
For branded or custom work, send a proof. It doesn't have to be fancy. A photo of a test piece or a digital mockup is enough. Time spent getting approval is almost always cheaper than re-cutting after the client says 'that's not what I meant.'
Be honest about what you can promise. Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), claims about shipping or delivery have to be truthful and substantiated. If you say 'guaranteed 48-hour turnaround,' you need the capacity to back it up. A written timestamp on approval helps everyone. 'Approved at 4:16 p.m.' is a beautiful thing (thankfully).
8. Plan the pickup or shipping before you start cutting
Don't finish a perfect engraving and then realize the shipping store closed at 4. If you're shipping, know the carrier deadlines and collection times. According to USPS pricing effective January 2025: First-Class Mail letter is $0.73, large envelope is $1.50, and additional ounces for large envelopes are $0.28. But the price matters less than the drop-off time. A stamp won't make up for a missed pickup.
For local clients, offer pickup or drop-off. If you're in Avon or Gig Harbor and you've searched 'CO2 laser Avon' or 'CO2 laser Gig Harbor' to find a shop, the real question is whether a local vendor can hit your deadline. Owning a Glowforge doesn't solve every logistics problem, but for last-minute orders, it removes a lot of them.
9. Price the rush like it's a risk, not a favor
Here's where I sound like a broken record: the cheapest option is usually the most expensive one. A $200 saving can turn into a $1,500 problem when someone misses the deadline or delivers garbage. I have a folder full of examples from the time we tested discount vendors on rush work. Never again.
Last quarter alone, we processed 47 rush orders with 95% on-time delivery. The two we missed? Both were under-priced and under-buffered. We accepted unrealistic timelines because we wanted to be nice. That was a mistake.
Price should include the material, machine hours, your experience, and the risk that the job could go wrong. If you're on the fence about how much to charge, ask what the client's consequence is if it's late. That number is a better guide than your hourly rate.
10. Debrief while it's still fresh
After the job ships, save the settings, note what worked, and update your checklist. It's tempting to collapse on the couch instead. But this 10-minute habit is the difference between getting faster and repeating the same fire.
Write down the material brand and thickness, power and speed settings, what the proof looked like, and what went wrong. You'll thank yourself next month.
