The quality rule that also protects your business
There is no single machine that fits every shop. If someone tells you there is, they either sell one machine, or they've never filled a rushed order with three different materials in one afternoon. I've done both.
I've run a small engraving and fabrication shop since 2017. In that time, I've documented 21 significant equipment mistakes. The wasted budget totaled roughly $11,000. That number still hurts. But those errors became a checklist, and this article is that checklist.

In my first year, I bought a desktop laser because I loved the glowforge logo and the online demos. The problem was my sample box included stainless steel coasters that I absolutely needed to engrave. The laser burned wood beautifully, but the steel coasters came out blank. A $1,450 order went out with no logo. It cost me $630 in refunds, $240 in shipping, and one very disappointed customer.
The Glowforge logo is an impressive mark, and the brand's promise of a '3D laser printer' is clever. But the machine is a CO2 laser, and CO2 lasers do not directly mark bare metal. That's not a flaw. It's a physics boundary. If you ignore the boundary, the brand doesn't save you.
This is why I now sort every equipment question into scenarios instead of 'what is the best laser'.
Four scenarios, one rule
Before you compare machines, decide what the machine will do every week. You are in one of these buckets:
- Desktop creative work: wood, acrylic, glass, leather, paper, gifts, signage, awards.

If your work is mostly wood, acrylic, glass, leather, or paper, a desktop CO2 laser is a no-brainer. Glowforge is the most polished version of that category. The software is extremely easy, the camera makes positioning simple, and the community project library saves you a ton of trial and error. If you are making branded signs, wedding favors, prototype parts, or awards, it is hard to beat that combination.
Now, the 'we create laser vs glowforge' question. I get that one a lot. The lower-priced machine looks impressive. I have used a friend's 'we create laser' unit, and the raw beam on wood and acrylic is decent. The counterintuitive part is this: the total cost of the cheaper machine is usually higher than the ticket price.
I only believed that after ignoring it. Three years ago, I bought a budget desktop laser because the price was half the Glowforge. On paid work, the quality of the engraving is the brand. I do not mean the design; I mean the physical edge, depth consistency, and contrast. A beautifully designed logo that burns unevenly makes your customer's company look amateurish. They will not blame the laser. They will blame you.
Scenario B: On-site metal cutting calls for a suitcase plasma cutter
A desktop laser is not a metal cutter. For cutting 14-gauge steel, stainless, or aluminum in a driveway or a maintenance bay, a suitcase plasma cutter is the purpose-built answer. It is called a suitcase because of the handle and box shape. You plug it into a 110V outlet, connect shop air, and cut sheet metal with a torch, not a beam.
I made a time-pressure mistake here. I had 48 hours to set up a maintenance shop, and I grabbed a plasma cutter at a local supply store without checking consumable availability. I did not compare three units. I picked the one in stock. It worked, but the torch consumables were almost impossible to find locally, and I ordered the wrong ones online. That produced a week of downtime.
In hindsight, I should have slowed down and asked one question: 'What consumables does the local store carry tomorrow?' Not 'which coupon code saves me $80 today.'
What should you look for in a suitcase plasma cutter?
- Duty cycle: occasional sheet metal can live on 20%; production cutting wants 40% or better.
- Amperage: 30-40A on 110V handles most thin sheet metal jobs. More amps is nice, but only if your power supply can feed it.
- Consumables: find out which electrodes, tips, and swirl rings are common in your region.
It's tempting to think a plasma cutter is just like a laser but for metal. It is not. It cuts metal, but it leaves dross, and you need to learn standoff and travel speed. After that learning, it's a durable, straightforward tool.
Scenario C: Permanent marking and welding with a fiber laser pen or fiber laser welding head
When a customer needs a serial number, a logo, or a date code on a metal part, you don't want a CO2 laser. You want a fiber laser marker. Handheld versions are often sold as a fiber laser pen.
A fiber laser pen can create a dark, permanent mark on stainless steel, aluminum, and some coated metals. It is not a toy. It requires eyewear and a shielded work area. And it can't cut wood or acrylic. The word 'laser' hides completely different physics.
If you need to weld thin stainless sheet or repair a cracked bracket, a fiber laser welding head is another breed again. It can make clean, low-heat welds much easier than TIG in some jobs. But it is also more dangerous, and the learning curve is steeper than a brochure suggests.
It's tempting to think one 'laser' can do every material. That is the simplification. The tool that engraves a logo on a steel toolbox doesn't weld hinges. The welder doesn't mark barcodes. Both are great, but only within their lane.
Again, quality is the brand. If your fiber laser pen puts a gray fuzzy serial number on a customer's parts, permanent doesn't mean professional. I know because my first fiber marking attempt produced 300 clamps with a misaligned serial number. The clamps worked. The customer said the markings looked like 'angry scratches.' $760 worth of branding damage, and I learned why test card settings matter.
How do you know which scenario you're in?
Three questions settle most arguments.
- What material will you process most? Wood, acrylic, leather, and paper point to desktop CO2. Bare metal marking points to fiber laser. Structural metal cutting points to plasma.
- Where does the work happen? At a workshop bench? Stay with a desktop laser or a fiber benchtop unit. In a parking lot or loading dock? Get a suitcase plasma cutter.
- What has to look perfect when the customer sees it? The engraving edge, the logo contrast, the weld seam. Spend your quality budget there.
If you're still on the fence, test before you commit. Use a friend's machine, a makerspace, or a contract manufacturer. That's better than guessing based on marketing.
The quality rule that also protects your business
Truthful and substantiated claims are the baseline of commercial advertising. Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), every claim you make about your product or service should be backed by evidence.
I have one hard rule: don't let a sloppy mark leave your shop with your customer's name on it. That rule isn't just pride. If you tell a customer 'we laser-engrave steel,' and the mark rubs off because you used the wrong machine, you're not just underdelivering. You've created a product that doesn't match its description. That can become a refund, a chargeback, or worse.
That's also why I keep official brand assets in a folder, including the correct Glowforge logo if I'm referencing the brand in our materials. Small details matter. A stretched logo and an uneven engraving both say the same thing: this job got rushed.
The machine you choose will not solve every problem. But if you choose it by scenario instead of by hype, it will solve the problem you actually have.
